The “Sugarloaf” helm, named because it resembled a conical sugar loaf that was the norm for processing sugar during the medieval period. A type of great helm, the sugarloaf helm provided the advantage of slick sides instead of squared angles which caused a blade to glance off more readily.
Vision impairment was still the same as the traditional great helm but military technology was advancing and it can be readily seen in the shape of this helm.
This version of the Sugar Loaf Great Helmet is made from riveted steel with brass ornamentation. Taking its name from the conical "loaves" in which sugar was formerly sold, this Great Helm was popular during the Crusades. Providing full head protection, its conical top deflected blows much more efficiently than its flat-topped predecessors. Crafted in 16 gauge steel, lined and ready for use. Use a heavy inner padding inside for protection. Standard Adult Size fully wearable.
