The kettle hat was a type of helmet that was used through whole Europe. It was mainly worn by infantrymen because the wide edge provided a good protection against blows from above (from cavalry) or projectiles that were thrown by the besieged. This battle-ready kettle hat is made after a type from approx. 1340. The Kettle Hat was probably developed from the Pot Helm, both aptly named because of their resemblance to cooking vessels. These helmets had many variations throughout the 13th and 14th centuries. Very popular among soldiers because it was relatively inexpensive and provided adequate head protection while still giving a wide range of vision.
